Happy Birthday SteveO
ok. in another episode of peekay attempting to be the best wife ever, we find the new mom making a devil's food cake by scratch from her new magnolia bakery cookbook(thank you Bittersweet!).
Let's just say, that is a very good intention. and as my dad says the road to hell is paved with em. but I made my shopping list and after baby's first nap, we headed out to Giant. I found all my ingredients INCLUDING a 3 cup sifter that i needed. whether or not it is worth $10 is another post altogether. But I must confess that having the CUTEST baby in the world does NOT make a fast shopping trip. yes, we were stopped by 4 fellow shoppers and i had to hear the whole "what a beautiful baby" story. as if, i don't know this. and i am not being smug, I had a serious time crunch! move away from the baby!
we get home at 2:30pm and the chocolate melting began, the egg separating (so glad i bought an egg separator at Williams-sonoma yesterday!!!), the use of 2 different mixers!!! who is this person i have become?
Just because something looks like chocolate, and the packaging says ghirardelli, DO NOT lick it off your hands!!!! That's right folks, I had my first introduction to UNSWEETENED chocolate. and let me tell you WE DO NOT GET ALONG. It was horrible. the UN really means satan's chocolate b/c it is so gross. it was just an instinct, I didn't even think it over, and next thing I knew my tongue was being dried in my mouth and i couldn't swallow or taste! i gargled water right out of the faucet! sheesh. so i am here to teach any other baking fools out there. unsweetened chocolate is not to be messed with.
long story, only slightly shorter...I did manage to finish the cake. voila. 2 layer, 9 inch devil's food cake with MOCHA buttercream frosting. and i made it all. who cares if it too me 4 hours! i even had to buy instant espresso grounds to make it mocha! i may be up all night after my one piece!!
And steve got his personalized Birthday cake plate. i was pretty pleased with myself. I also Pimp'd his ride by ordering custom floor mats for his truck in Burgundy and gold(redskins colors, hail to em) and get this. OUR INITIALS!!! hahhah. PKR on my side, SMR on his. gotta love it!!!! ggbailey.com rules. I can't wait to make pink ones for my wagon!!!! tomorrow's weigh-in may have to be postponed until I can run off all these calories from my one piece of cake. days til my next soccer game: 2, teaspoons of espresso in mocha frosting: 3, netflix videos waiting to be watched:3, days they have sitting on the shelf:6.
